Established in November 2007, the mandate of the Association is to foster an independent community of scholars dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of Canadian refugee and forced migration research, establishing active partnerships and collaborations among researchers, teachers, practitioners, policy makers and advocates, and supporting publications, conferences, and other fora that contribute to open and inclusive communication and networking around issues relating to refugee and forced migration studies in Canada and elsewhere.
CARFMS 2013: Spaces of Refuge
The 2013 CARFMS Conference will bring together researchers, policymakers, displaced persons and advocates from diverse disciplinary and regional backgrounds to discuss spaces of refuge for forced migrants in the context of a changing global geopolitical context. We invite participants from a wide range of perspectives to explore the practical, experiential, policy-oriented, legal and theoretical questions raised by situations of forced migration as a result of conflict, development, climate change, and natural disaster. We also invite studies of short and long-term options for, challenges of, and success with respect to, integration, settlement, resettlement and voluntary return. In studies of both migration and settlement, we are particularly interested in studies that address threats to humanitarian space, and recommendations to counter such threats and build solidarity with those who seek refuge. The conference will feature keynote and plenary speeches from leaders in the field, and we welcome proposals for individual posters, papers, organized panels and roundtables structured around various broad subthemes.

The 2010 CARFMS Conference will bring together researchers, policymakers, displaced persons and advocates from diverse disciplinary and regional backgrounds to discuss the changes and challenges faced in the field of forced migration. We invite participants from a wide range of perspectives to explore the practical, experiential, policy-oriented, legal and theoretical questions raised by different processes of change affecting forced migrants at the local, national, regional and international levels. The conference will feature keynote and plenary speeches from leaders in the field, as well as presentations of individual papers and organized panels structured around various sub-themes.
CARFMS 2009: Forced Migration and Shifting Borders
This conference brings together academics, activists, NGOs, policy makers, government representatives, and forced migrants themselves from a wide array of disciplinary and regional backgrounds in order to discuss diverse issues related to forced migration within and across borders. We invite participants from a range of perspectives to engage in a series of interdisciplinary dialogues in order to explore, debate and understand the varied aspects of forced migration.
